The WDC is seeking to recruit an Investment Executive on a part-time specified purpose basis to cover Parental Leave (10.5 hours per week) to provide parental leave cover. The appointment is expected to last for up to 16-months, with the possibility of an extension, subject to organisational requirements and the continued availability of funding.

Western Investment Fund:
Managed by the WDC the Western Investment Fund (WIF) provides risk capital through equity finance and loans to SMEs, Social Enterprises, and Community Groups in Ireland’s Western Region, which includes counties Clare, Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo, and Roscommon. The WIF seeks both a financial return on investment and socio-economic impact for the region, operating on a self-sustaining evergreen basis. The WIF invests across a wide range of sectors and stages of a company’s lifecycle from seed to early stage to expansion/growth.
Purpose of Role:
The successful candidate will be appointed on a Temporary Specified-Purpose Contract and will report to the Head of Investment and working under the guidance of the Senior Portfolio Managers, will have key responsibilities that include conducting appropriate financial and commercial due diligence of companies seeking investment and supporting the disbursal of investments. Additionally, the role involves supporting the ongoing monitoring and management of the investment portfolio.
Key Responsibilities:
The following are the main tasks to be undertaken:
- Support the Head of Investment and Senior Investment Managers.
- Assist in conducting analysis of funding applications.
- Support in the disbursal of investments and loans.
- Assist and support the Senior Investment Managers with the management and monitoring of a portfolio of investments and loans.
- Maintain all project information, in a timely manner, on SmartSimple, the WDC’s Investment Management Information System.
- Prepare regular reports on investments made, and in progress, and prepare various other reports relevant to the fund.
- Carry out analysis of each investment as part of the WDC’s annual financial audit and support any internal audit requirements.
- Research and report on trends and opportunities to feed into WDC investment strategies and funding mechanisms
- Deal with enquiries for funding.
- Assist in marketing and promotion for the WIF.
- Attendance at networking events appropriate to the role.

- 3 years plus relevant experience
- Hold an appropriate degree and / or professional qualification in accounting, business or corporate finance
- Expertise in
- Project management
- Business analysis and review
- Funding for SMEs and early-stage businesses
- Possess strong commercial judgement and general business acumen
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Excellent relationship building skills
- Possess a high degree of computer literacy
- Exposure and expertise in a variety of sectors and an ability to become knowledgeable in a particular sector
Desirable Criteria:
The following requirements are desirable:
- Understanding and knowledge of the early-stage companies
- Understanding and knowledge of the enterprise and regional development eco-system
- Expert knowledge of a key sector is an advantage such as MedTech.

Conditions
All appointments are subject to the Western Development Commission Act 1998 and staff must agree to the WDC Code of Business Conduct under the Code of Practice for the Governance of State Bodies.
Contract Type:
Temporary Specified-Purpose Contract (Parental Leave Cover) for a period of up to 16 months. This appointment is linked to the parental leave of the substantive post holder and will terminate upon their return to duty, or on 13 October 2027, whichever is earlier. Any extension beyond this period would be subject to organisational requirements and the continued availability of funding.
Probation:
The appointment is subject to the satisfactory completion of a 6-month probationary period.
Due to the nature of this role, the successful candidate will hold a full driving license and have access to transport as this post will involve travel nationally in support of the seven county Western Region. When absent from home and your designated office location on official duty, you will be paid accordingly. The candidate should also be prepared to undertake occasional international travel during the undertaking of their duties.
The WDC Head Office is in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. WDC staff are also located in Galway, Letterkenny and Sligo. The successful candidate may seek to be located in Ballaghaderreen, Galway or Sligo in line with the remote working policy of the WDC.
The salary scale for this post will be equivalent to that of the Civil Service Higher Executive Officer Standard Scale:
The salary scale for this post is the Higher Executive Officer Standard Scale as follows (effective 1st June 2026) (pro-rated for hours of work):
€60,029 – €61,785 – €63,537 – €65,286 – €67,044 – €68,792 – €70,547 – €73,077 LSI1 – €76,546 LSI2
Please note: The starting salary for the person appointed to this post will be the first point on the above scale unless the successful application has public sector experience as per circular 08/2019.
